Favorite Cold Remedies
I don’t know about where you are, but here in eastern Colorado colds and flus have been going around. And at our house, 3 out of the 5 of us have been hit hard with sore throats and runny noses and coughing. This is a super busy time of the year for us, so we don’t have the luxury of slowing down to rest and recover. I am not a big fan of medication that just work to reduce symptoms. So, I’m going to share my favorite cold remedies with you today that seem to shorten our colds and flus (without a prescription), as well as some things we use for immune-support.

Nebulizer Machine and Solution
The first thing that I am so thankful to have on hand is a nebulizer machine. This one from Amazon is similar to the one I have, and it has worked well for us for the last few years. I use it every time we have a tight cough to break up phlegm and decrease inflammation. I put a solution of distilled water, hydrogen peroxide and sea salt in it that we nebulize once an hour until a productive cough is achieved. Here is the exact recipe that I use.
Symptom Relief
For the younger kids I use Hyland’s Cough and Mucus Relief Syrup. It is herbal and it is very easy on their stomach, while still expectorating mucus and relieving a cough. I’ve used it with all of my kids since they were small, and it is still my go-to every time someone has a cold and cough.
For my husband, my oldest son and myself I tend to use this Mucinex, because it is the best over-the-counter expectorant, in my opinion! It can give me an upset stomach, but my men never complain about that… so maybe that’s just me! I’ve found that it is best to take it faithfully every 12 hours until you get your desired results (according to package directions). It just doesn’t seem work as well if you take a random dose here and there.
We also drink Organic Throat Coat Herbal Tea to help sore throats and coughs. We steep it according to package directions and add honey and occasionally lemon.
Immune-Boosting Tips
As soon as anyone comes down with a sore throat or cough, I start encouraging everyone to boost their immunity. We do this by drinking Green Tea with honey and lemon juice. The honey is antibacterial and antiviral, while the green tea is full of antioxidants.
We also take a supplement from VerVita Products called Immune-Rmor. It works by supporting healthy cell production. We have taken it for a summer, anytime someone in the house gets sick, and taken faithfully, I absolutely believe it helped us to stay healthier and decrease the severity of our colds and flus. (I do not get paid to recommend this product, I just love it so much I don’t want to leave it out! Also, if you look around on their website, they have a number of other helpful supplements that my family uses that have worked wonderfully.)
Finally, my favorite thing to use for immunity and for help in reducing the longevity of sickness is our red light. I have 2 different options from Fringe Heals, a wrap and a panel, that we use depending on what we are wanting. It helps relieve pain and inflammation while regenerating cells. There are many benefits of red light therapy if you care to research it.
